BACKGROUND
The Vietnam Fallen Warriors Memorial is a historical monument dedicated to the lives of American soldiers from the Houston area lost in the Vietnam War. The monument is located in the Veterans Memorial Park near the intersection of Hardy Toll Road and Tidwell Road, in Harris County. The project was undertaken by Harris County Facilities and Property Maintenance and a private monument designer. On the project, infraTECH acted as a structural engineering consultant.
PROJECT FEATURE
The architectural features of the project consisted of nine 6.5’ x 4’-4” granite monuments, one 11’-0” tall granite obelisk, and a surficial cladding of 4” pavers. The pavers were supported by a 45 ft semicircular reinforced concrete slab. The monoliths were supported by two 1’-2” diameter 16’-6” piles each, and the obelisk was supported by four 1’-2” diameter 16’-6” piles. The major challenge working on this project was the tight turnaround time. infraTECH began working on this project in June of 2022 and the monument was open to the public by November of 2022.
RELEVANT SERVICES
On this project, infraTECH’s relevant services included:
• Site visit and collection of necessary photos, videos, and measurements to complete the design.
• Coordination with geotechnical engineer on the foundation design, including exploration of deep and shallow foundations, required pile diameter and length, and subbase preparation.
• Preparation of the foundation layout plan, demolition plan, and reconstruction plans of modifications to existing pavers. Coordination of paver layouts, monument placement, and obelisk locations with others.
• Development of foundation design, details, and construction specifications for reinforced concrete elements.
• Perform constructability review.
• Provide construction management services during construction including shop drawing review, response to RFI and final inspection of structural elements before placing architectural finish.
