BACKGROUND

The existing corrugated metal pipe (CMP) arch culvert across Belle Park drive that outfalls to the Brays Bayou, located within City of Houston, has experienced severe degradation (multiple caves) and inefficiency to convey stormwater runoff from the surrounding residential area. Recently, approximately 150 ft of the culvert adjacent to the outfall collapsed exacerbating the situation. The Houston Public Works initiated the project for rehabilitation and replacement of the existing culvert to ensure positive drainage to the outfall.

PROJECT FEATURE

The design for the Belle Park Drive culvert replacement includes hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for the culvert design flow and conveyance computation, respectively. Multiple sanitary sewers pass through the existing culvert and a portion of the culvert is located outside the drainage easement of the City of Houston. Initially, a 1,200 ft broken-back culvert with precast concrete boxes was designed along a new alignment to avoid these conflicts. However, due to cost and constructability issues, only the collapsed portion of the existing CMP culvert is proposed to be replaced with precast concrete boxes incorporating multiple bends along a new alignment. The remaining portion of the existing culvert will be rehabilitated using CIPP treatment. To prevent scouring the outfall at Brays Bayou, the outfall of the proposed culvert has been designed at an acute angle to the flow in main channel with stone riprap.

RELEVANT SERVICES

As the prime provider for the project, infraTECH is responsible for project management, detailed engineering analysis and design, coordination with the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD), preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E), and support during construction.
