BACKGROUND
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is currently improving Interstate Highway 69 (IH 69), also known as US 59, between Montrose Road and Almeda Road. The project is part of TxDOT’s North Houston Highway Improvement Project. The project goal is to reconstruct over a mile of IH 69, widening the roadway from six lanes to ten and to convert IH 69 from its existing above grade configuration to a below grade roadway.
PROJECT FEATURE
The project involves the reconstruction of a total length of 6,200 feet of the IH 69 ML roadway. The project features include:
Roadway: The modifications to the existing IH 69 roadway, frontage roads, and cross streets involve development of widened or modified pavement sections, addition of sidewalks, addition of new high mast lighting for improved illumination, and construction of new traffic signals to facilitate modified traffic patterns.
Retaining Walls: The construction of retaining walls for the lowered IH 69 ML roadway and reconstruction of retaining walls which support the IH 69 to Spur 527 direct connector bridge.
Bridges: Structural design of new bridges to support the cross streets and Main Street railway line and modification of existing deck structures.
Drainage Design Components: Redesign of the existing drainage system required to account for the modified topography. Drainage elements include realignment of the storm sewers, addition of a 118,192 gpm capacity pump station, construction of detention ponds, utility relocations, and construction of junction boxes and other ancillary structures.
RELEVANT SERVICES
infraTECH developed the design of the special drainage structures for this project. These special structures were necessary due to the extreme elevation changes allowing work around the lowered IH 69 roadway.
